FAQs

What services do we offer?

Honey Creek Counseling offers an array of nature-based, experiential interventions; among them, equine-assisted psychotherapy and learning, horticulture therapy, movement/mindfulness based practices, and yoga. Nature-based therapies, sometimes called ecotherapy, can be defined as any nature-focused intervention that recognizes our innate knowledge that the mind, body and spirit are deeply and inextricably connected to the natural world. Research reveals that experiences in the natural world can reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety and many other mental health diagnoses. When coupled with other more conventional treatment interventions such as CBT or psychotherapy, eco-therapies are very effective. A simple walk in the park may reduce anxiety alone, but when coupled with an intention to reduce anxiety through eating healthy brain foods, talk therapy, and guided meditation, the impact of these interventions together can be life-changing.

Why Nature-Based Therapies?

Research demonstrates that spending time exposed to nature can help all of us feel healthy and vibrant. At Honey Creek Counseling and Recovery Services, we utilize nature-based therapies to support you in the journey toward your fullest potential. We can help you and your loved ones with a wide range of mental health symptoms ranging from depression, to substance abuse, to trauma, to bullying.

What is Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy and Learning?

Equine-assisted psychotherapy and learning is an experiential intervention designed to complement other traditional psychotherapeutic or learning methods. It affords clients a safe environment to learn, grow, heal, and challenge themselves. Honey Creek Counseling utilizes the EAGALA model (eagala.org) and the Natural Lifemanship (naturallifemanship.com) model of equine-assisted psychotherapy and learning. In both models, a licensed mental health professional is always present.

What about horsemanship skills?

We do not offer riding lessons nor direct teaching of horsemanship.

What is Yoga?

Yoga is a practice that utilizes postures, breathing exercises, meditation, and guided imagery to improve mental and physical health. The holistic focus of yoga encourages integration of mind, body and spirit. Yoga, breathing exercises, and meditation have been shown to reduce chronic pain, improve mood, and reduce anxiety. Science is only beginning to understand the healing potential of this ancient practice.

What is Horticulture Therapy?

Horticulture therapy utilizes the therapeutic essence of a garden to deliver and enhance more traditional mental health treatments and teaches skills that can be utilized long after therapy is complete. During a horticulture therapy session, you will tend to and grow a variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and/or flowers at your own pace and designation. You will learn the health and nutritional benefits of various plants and how you may incorporate them into your daily wellness routine.

Where do we hold our therapy sessions?

Honey Creek offers therapy in the community (horticulture/yoga) or a farm location (equine). Sessions may be held at a garden, park, in your home, or at another ideal location.

How will I get to my therapy session?

In some instances, Honey Creek will provide transportation to and from your session. Speak with your therapist about the options.
